City break? Work trip? Holidays? When travelling in Europe, what happens if you’re ill? For peace of mind, carry your European Health Insurance Card. The card entitles you to state-provided healthcare during temporary stays in any of the 28 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll receive the same medical care at the same cost – free in many countries – as the locals. The card covers the treatment of pre-existing conditions or maternity care but not planned medical treatment. So, how do you get your European Health Insurance Card? In many countries, it is issued automatically when you’re insured for state healthcare, otherwise apply through your health insurer. And it’s for free! Remember: Carry the card when you travel. Every member of the travelling party needstheir own card, including children. The card doesn’t replace travel insurance. Private healthcare or extra costs like return flights home are not covered.
