For local firefighter, honoring first responders who died on 9/11 a year-round duty

(STEPHANIE) ABOUT A MONTH FROM NOW – WE’LL SPEND A DAY HONORING AND REMEMBERING THE FIRST RESPONDERS WHO DIED ON 9-11. BUT FOR A LOCAL FIREFIGHTER – IT’S A YEAR-ROUND DUTY. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S LEX GRAY INTRODUCES US TO A FIRE CAPTAIN WHO IS A LIVING MEMORIAL TO THAT TERRIBEL DAY. (LEX) I DO 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMBS EACH YEAR AROUND SEPTEMBER 11TH IN HONOR OF THE FIREFIGHTERS THAT WERE KILLED. NAT – BREATHING FIVE YEARS AGO – BILL PRICE PULLED ON HIS FIREFIGHTING GEAR FOR HIS FIRST MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB. THEY CONSIST OF CLIMBING 110 FLIGHTS IN FULL TURNOUT GEAR, CARRYING THE TAG OF ONE OF THE FIREFIGHTERS LOST ON 9/11. NAT – STEPS FIVE YEARS LATER – HE’S STILL CARRYING THOSE TAGS. SO YOU’RE ESSENTIALLY COMPLETING THE CLIMB THAT HE WASN’T ABLE TO. AS A FIRE CAPTAIN – PRICE CAN IMAGINE MAKING THE SACRIFICE SO MANY MADE THAT DAY. A LOT OF THEM WENT IN PROBABLY KNOWING THEY MAY NOT BE COMING OUT. HE CAN ALSO IMAGINE THE TOWERS FALLING. I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK, NOT ONLY WAS I BORN AND RAISED THERE BUT WHEN I WAS IN THE NAVY I WAS STATIONED THERE ON A SHIP AND I CAN REMEMBER STANDING WATCH AT NIGHT LOOKING AT THE TOWERS AND ALWAYS SEEING THAT SKYLINE. THAT’S WHY WEEK AFTER WEEK, YOU SEE PRICE CLIMBING. I JUST FEEL WE SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING TO REMEMBER THESE GUYS ALWAYS. CITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY HOLD STAIR CLIMBS AROUND SEPTEMBER 11TH EVERY YEAR. BUT PRICE PRACTICES FOR THOSE ALMOST YEAR-ROUND FOR 9-11 – CARRYING A FLAG WITH THE NAMES OF FIRST RESPONDERS WHO DIED IN THE TOWERS WHEN YOU’RE DOING IT BY YOURSELF, IT’S MORE SERENE, IT’S QUIETER. IT’S ALSO GETTING HARDER AND HARDER. I CAN FEEL IT MORE AS I GET OLDER MY KNEES ARENT AGREEING WITH ME AS MUCH ANYMORE (BUTTED TO) WE’LL SEE HOW LONG I CAN KEEP GOING. AND THAT’S WHY YOU SEE THE NEXT GENERATION OF PRICES CLIMBING, TOO. WHEN I’M DONE AND I CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE, I WANT THEM TO BE ABLE TO DO IT AND HONOR THE GUYS THAT DIED AND KNOW WHAT WE’RE DOING AND WHY WE’RE CLIMBING. (STEPHANIE) PRICE WILL CLIMB IN ROANOKE ON SEPTEMBER 8TH, THEN AGAIN IN HAMPTON ROADS ON SEPTEMBER 11TH. THIS YEAR – HE’S ADDING ANOTHER CHALLENGE, AND TRYING TO RAISE EVEN MORE MONEY FOR THE FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION.
